Remembering Dolly
Some voices become part of the story of country music forever. Dolly Parton was one of those voices. For generations of country music fans, Dolly gave us far more than songs. She gave us stories, laughter, heart, hope and memories that became part of our lives. She was a songwriter, performer, storyteller, businesswoman and philanthropist – but through all of it, she remained unmistakably Dolly.
She had a way of making extraordinary things feel personal. Her songs could make you laugh, break your heart, remind you where you came from or give you a little hope when you needed it. And, here in Nashville, Dolly has always felt like one of our own. She understood where she came from, never lost sight of it and carried those roots with her wherever her career took her. She helped make country music bigger without ever making it less country.
The last time I had the opportunity to work with Dolly was in 2022, on the Dolly Mountain Magic Christmas Special. She was the consummate professional, an incredible host, completely prepared, generous with everyone around her and, of course, an extraordinary talent. But what stays with me most is what it felt like to be around her. Dolly had a presence that filled the room, but somehow she also had a way of making people feel comfortable and connected. That kind of talent can’t be taught. It comes from something deeper. She was a once-in-a-generation talent. There will never be another Dolly.
And perhaps that’s why saying goodbye feels so difficult. When an artist has been part of the soundtrack of your life for as long as Dolly has been part of ours, it can feel like saying goodbye to a little piece of your own history. Her songs will continue to find new listeners. Her stories will continue to be told. And the generations who grew up with her music will continue to pass those songs along. That’s the beautiful thing about a legacy like hers. It doesn’t end.
Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the memories, the laughter, the kindness and the incredible example you gave us. What a legacy. What a life. What a gift. Rest easy, Dolly.

A Few Notes
Dolly’s passing has me thinking about something I love about country music – the way a song can outlive the moment it was written. A song can begin as one person’s story and somehow become part of millions of other people’s lives. That’s the magic.
We hear a song for the first time and maybe we like it. Then we hear it again. Somewhere along the way, it becomes connected to a person, a place, a season of our lives or a memory we didn’t even realize we were making. And years later, just a few notes can take us right back.
That’s one of the reasons I believe seeing country music live is so special. You aren’t just hearing songs you’ve known for years. You are hearing them from the people who created them, lived them and gave them a life of their own.
Sometimes an artist tells the story behind a song and you suddenly hear it differently. Sometimes a performance reminds you why you loved the song in the first place. And, sometimes, you discover a song or an artist you didn’t expect to love at all. That’s what I hope for when we gather onboard Top Shelf Country Cruise ’27.
Of course, we’ll come together for the big performances. Why do you think the smallest moments often become the memories we treasure most?
What an awesome question to ponder. I think it’s because “grand gestures” often focus on the person doing the giving. They are the ones who tend to be celebrated because of their generosity, which is great! But small moments are often much more heartfelt because it’s not about the “giver,” it’s about the unselfish act of “giving”. It doesn’t even have to be a material gift. A compliment, a word of encouragement or an honest conversation can change someone’s life for the better.
An example from my life – after doing several interviews and documentaries with Hank Williams, Jr. about his complicated and often controversial life, he unexpectedly sent me an autographed photo on which he wrote “Thank you for making me look good.” I never whitewashed or excused his past in those interviews, but I always gave him the opportunity to freely explain the man he is deep down. Up until that point, Hank had felt the press only wanted to frame him as an uncontrollable wild man. I guess he figured I would do the same. His small gesture of thanking me for allowing him reveal his better qualities has stuck with me forever. It taught me a lesson about not judging a book by its cover or buying into preconceived notions.

You’ve heard the old expression, “it’s the little things that count.” Well, that is so true.
On Karen‘s and my first wedding anniversary, she secretly got up in the middle of the night to create her personal anniversary greeting in a spot where she was sure I’d see it. Any guesses yet? Okay, here goes. I’m not sure if she had seen it done somewhere, came up with it on her own or whatever; it didn’t matter, because it was her effort and filled with love and a little bit of a sacrifice. She had taken a tube of her favorite lipstick and in big letters on the bathroom mirror wrote, “Happy 1st Anniversary! I love you!”
Simple and memorable. What did I do? Well, I gave her a card and at dinner that night I handed her my gift.
It was a replacement for that tube of her favorite lipstick.
