Our Take: She Knew How to Pick ‘Em!

Perhaps as long as 20 years ago, my mother called me in a frantic tone telling me that I needed to fly to New York to see the most amazing singer she had seen since Joe Williams. She had seen him perform in a small venue in Harlem and said he was unique and powerful. I asked her what his name was and she couldn’t remember, but she was certain that the venue was St. Nick’s Pub. My mother, Anita Berry, would never forget any reference to Christmas, so I believed her.

After a bit of digging, I realized that Mom had “found” Gregory Porter. Though she was prone to hyperbole, she was on the money when it came to Gregory. Five minutes into his first song, I knew that I was hearing a voice that was unique, but, more importantly, it was compelling and soothing at the same time. I could not take my eyes off his performance and I could not think of anything else when he was singing. To this day, I feel the same way.

Most of his show at that time was a presentation of his own music. Each song from the heart with a message that mattered. No frills. No gimmicks. Just beautiful music and meaningful lyrics. Given his size and the seriousness of his topics, he could have come across as imposing and distant, but his beautiful soul was always on display and his engaging smile made you feel comfortable and at peace.

There is a show biz adage that even a “B” singer can sound great with an “A” song. Recently, Gregory has added tunes from the Great American Songbook to his shows and his recordings. Doing so allows us to compare his voice to others. I knew I loved when he sang, but was I falling for the tune or the singer? Of course the answer is both, but, if he never wrote a song and his shows were replete with tunes we know, he would be just as wonderful and exciting as he is when singing his songs.

I have heard giants in the business say that Gregory Porter is their favorite male vocalist, regardless of genre. Not sure how many folks are on that team, but count me in.

Gregory is co-hosting our Journey of Jazz ’27 cruise in late January. That journey will take us to New Orleans. The thought of him singing on the way to and from New Orleans excites me. Though he is from Bakersfield, CA, he could easily persuade folks that The Big Easy was somewhere in his background. The richness of his voice. The effortlessness of his singing. But, mostly the spirit he presents has a mystical, supernatural feel that is so obvious in New Orleans. Gregory seems to be a person who has lived for decades and will continue to live forever. Spiritually present at all times.

I am sure that I would have located Gregory without the assistance of my mother, but her involvement makes for a better story. Honoring her today is also apt. Today would have been her 97th birthday. Never one for shunning the spotlight or missing a party, I bought her a cake….just in case.

This fall, several of our artists are appearing at SFJAZZ as part of that organization’s 2026-2027 concert season.

Christian McBride will perform with both his Ray Brown Centennial Celebration project (September 10-11) and Ursa Major (September 12-13). Branford Marsalis & Dianne Reeves will celebrate John Coltrane with music from the seminal 1963 album John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman on September 17-19. The Ravi Coltrane Quartet will also celebrate Ravi’s late father with a concert on September 19 at UC-Berkeley. Finally, on September 24-26, Marcus Miller will perform music from the We Want Miles album, alongside classic Davis repertoire, joined by fellow Miles alumni Mike Stern, Bill Evans and Mino Cinelu.

SFJAZZ Concerts

Across the country in NYC, Jazz at Lincoln Center will be featuring numerous SCE artists, as it kicks off its concert season on September 17-19 with Marsalis & the Masters, featuring Wynton Marsalis, performing with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, who interprets the music of jazz masters Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Chick Corea and other giants.

On October 2-3, Catherine Russell & Friends (including guest Cyndi Lauper) will celebrate her 70th Birthday.

In the Appel Room on October 9-10, Wycliffe Gordon, an original member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, will present his musical autobiography, Welcome to Georgia Town, a journey through his life experiences and upbringing in Georgia, with an assist from the five-person chorus Damien Sneed and Friends.

Finally, another longtime SCE favorite, Chucho Valdés will be joined on October 16-17 by an all-star quintet featuring saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist John Patitucci, trumpeter Terence Blanchard and drummer Marcus Gilmore, in a musical celebration of the Cuban pianist’s 85th birthday.

A Few Notes

There are some experiences that are hard to describe until you have actually lived them. You can talk about them. You can show the pictures. You can tell the stories. But somehow, something still gets lost in the telling. Live music is like that. There is the anticipation before the first song. The moment the lights come up. The first few notes of a song you know by heart. And then there’s that moment when you look around and realize everyone else is feeling it, too. You can’t really explain that feeling. You have to be there.

This is something I heard often after our first Top Shelf Country Cruise. Guests came onboard knowing they were going to see artists they love, but many told me the experience was different from what they had imagined. It wasn’t just the music. It was seeing artists up close. Running into friends around the ship. Discovering a performance they didn’t expect. Hearing a song in a completely different setting. And realizing that the people you came with, or the people you met along the way, had become part of the experience too.

There’s a difference between watching a show and being part of something. And I think that’s what makes experiences like Top Shelf Country Cruise so special. The music is at the heart of it, but the memories happen all around it.

Sometimes they’re planned. And sometimes they are the moments you couldn’t have predicted.

That’s exactly why, this week, I wanted to hear from people who experienced Top Shelf firsthand. Meet the Sin City Cruisers. They are one of our Top Shelf Cruise Crews and they are going to tell you what it felt like to actually be there.

**Friends, Country Music & Their Top Shelf Country Cruise Adventure**

Some friendships are built over decades. Others grow along the way. And, sometimes, a group of people simply discovers that they really enjoy doing life together. What’s a live music moment you’ll never forget – and what made it so special?

Your answers reminded us of something we’ve talked about many times: sometimes it’s the moments you simply couldn’t have planned that become the ones you remember most.

Andrew Lund
When Andrew looks back on Top Shelf Country Cruise ’26, he remembers being excited to see all of the artists, but one artist surprised him more than anyone. He had seen Keith Urban, Scotty McCreery and Lee Brice in concert before. While all three delivered, Lee Brice completely blew him away. From the theater performances to the interview, the pool concert and the meet-and-greet, Andrew found himself connecting with Lee’s stories and music in a whole new way. “His stories and his music resonate very well with me and he has become my favorite country artist.”

And then there was another moment that made the week unforgettable. Andrew and his wife renewed their vows while Parmalee serenaded them with “Take My Name.” For Andrew, those moments and the countless opportunities to hear live music throughout the week made the decision to come back an easy one. In fact, they didn’t wait until they got home. They were first in line to sign up for Top Shelf Country Cruise ’27 while they were still onboard.

Darlene Henry
Darlene’s answer came with not one unforgettable moment, but three. Her first was Keith Urban. Darlene and her husband, Ray, were sitting in the front row of the accessible seating section when Keith came into the audience during his performance. Keith ended up right beside Ray, and the two shared a hug. Someone captured the moment on video and sent it to them. Darlene says her husband, now 81, has shown that video to absolutely everyone – and couldn’t be happier.

Her second favorite was Parmalee, whose personal stories and behind-the-scenes videos made her feel like she really got to know the band.

And then there was Scotty McCreery. “He is so happy all the time – smiles while singing, relates to the audience, truly loves what he does.” Darlene said Scotty’s happiness was contagious. “He made all of us happy because he was so happy.”

And her final note says it all:
Can’t wait till 2027!

That’s What Being There is All About

I love reading responses like these because everyone experiences the same week a little differently. For one person, it’s an artist they’ve never seen quite this way before. For another, it’s a moment with someone they love. It might be a song, a story, a surprise encounter or simply the feeling of being surrounded by people who are there for the same reason you are. You can’t always plan those moments. You just have to be there when they happen.

What separates a great concert from a truly unforgettable live music experience?

To me, a great concert is when you hear the music you love and get to sing and dance along. It’s awesome! But a truly “unforgettable” live music experience goes a step beyond with elements of surprise that you never expected. Examples that have made it unforgettable for me: 1993 when Garth didn’t just play Texas Stadium, he was secretly wired and literally “flew” around the stadium getting close to fans even in the upper tiers, Jason Aldean singing hits from supergroup Alabama because that was the first concert he attended as a kid – all of us in the crowd went wild over Jason’s covers, and Blake Shelton surprising us during his concert by wearing a cowboy hat with a fake mullet as he sang his early hits when he really looked that way! Hilarious, and so much fun! Anything that feels spontaneous or a little off the wall is unforgettable.

There’s nothing like having the entire venue energized by the thought of what’s to come, and especially NOT knowing what’s to come. The recent mega concert for Alan Jackson’s final show was just that. The stellar lineup was well known in advance, so that had the crowd fired up. Then came a huge surprise. Lo and behold, out walks George Strait! That’s a lasting memory for sure. Here’s another example. I’ll take you back to my younger days. The year 1972 in Knoxville, Tennessee, my wife Karen and I scored tickets to see the Rolling Stones. Our tickets were 8th row center. The concert is getting ready to start, so we’re thinking “Here comes Mick and the gang”, but no! There was a surprise opening act, the iconic Stevie Wonder ! What an unbelievable way to launch a concert. After more than 5 decades, I remember it like it was last week.

Our Take: It’s All About the Bass

Marcus Miller famously claims that “every great song begins with a great bass line.” True or not, certainly every song Marcus has written can make that claim. The bass has many different roles and purposes. The bass can lay back in the rhythm section, provide the connection between the rhythm and harmony or it can be out front leading the tune.

The significance of the bass is solidified in my mind by the types of individuals who play the instrument. Besides Marcus, there are John Clayton, Christian McBride, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke and so many more. They say catchers make the best managers because they have spent their careers seeing the whole field. Perhaps that is true for bassists. For the most part, they are in the back or hovering on the side controlling the flow of the music.

Certainly, on our cruise programs, Marcus, Christian and John have assumed significant leadership roles year after year. No one has hosted more cruises for Signature Cruise Experiences than Marcus. His amazing combination of expertise and versatility makes him the “perfect” host for almost any program. Christian leads a robust number of first-class bands, each with a different style and emphasis, but all sharing excellence in musicianship and appeal to our guests. Watching John conduct the Big Band on The Jazz Cruise may be my favorite experience on the cruises year after year. His energy, authenticity and commitment to the music is fabulous.

Having praised and recognized these men, did you know that if they had the same role in the band a century ago, they would not be plucking the strings of a stand-up bass? Instead, they would be blowing hard into the mouthpiece of a tuba.

In the early 1900s jazz and ragtime (in New Orleans), the tuba naturally served as the primary bass instrument, primarily because early bands played outdoors and marched. Portable brass instruments as opposed to a stationary bass were essential. Though not directly on point, we can view Marcus’ interest in playing the bass clarinet in a different light.

The tuba survived through the 1920s when jazz moved into indoor recording studios. Its loud, punchy projection made it ideal for early, low-fidelity microphones. As the music became more sophisticated, the tuba gave way to the upright bass we see on bandstands today, particularly in the jazz clubs of the big cities.

The tuba continues to be the source of the sound of the strong beat in New Orleans when a band hits the streets. Other than in a full orchestra or midfield of a college football halftime show, New Orleans may be the only place where tubas live these days.

We will be presenting several opportunities to enjoy that music when Journey of Jazz ’27 has its overnight in New Orleans in a few months. Besides the Rebirth Brass Band, we have engaged smaller groups of New Orleans musicians to take us back to the era when the tuba was the thumper of the group. Cannot wait to spend time in the Big Easy.

My admiration for bassists has many facets. I believe that playing it well requires great skill and years of practice. When it is time to solo, an average drummer can construct a solo that includes flamboyant elements that will excite an audience. As a former drummer, I have long fought the notion that you judge a drummer by his solo performances. To me, that is like judging a basketball player by his free throws. The quality of a drummer can only be discerned when you hear them play with others. That is the test.

Back to bassists, creating a “wow” bass solo seems to be difficult. The number of acrobatic elements that can be present with a bass in both your hands is very limited. Having said that, when a bassist pulls out a bow and begins to produce those amazing tones and sounds, I melt. Digressing a bit, the bow on the strings is particularly appealing to me when a cello is involved, too. I spend a lot of time streaming “cello music.”

When asked recently how I fit my love of cello music into my schedule and other music interests, I declare, as everyone knows, “there is always room for cello!” And to think how cerebral most of this note has been. Therein lies the problem. The ability to stay focused and on point for more than 630 words has always been a challenge.

One final thought about the bass. Hauling that instrument from gig to gig must be very difficult. Some airlines now will not let you check them on the plane. The charge for checking the bass, when allowed, is one of the great crapshoots. Our musicians turn in their receipts for reimbursement and, seldom, if ever, are there two charges for the same amount of money. It is likely that in the back of the luggage room, there is a wheel that is spun for each bass checked. Whatever amount shows up is the amount charged.

Storing them on the ship is also difficult. They take up a lot of space, but our musicians need access to their cases. Working that out is fun to watch. Yes, basses on the ship are a challenge, but it could be worse…they could be tubas!

Celebration of Sonny Rollins

On Saturday, September 19, the Jazz Foundation of America is presenting, in partnership with the Rollins family, “Saxophone Colossus: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Sonny Rollins” at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Rollins, who died on May 25 at the age of 95, was generally considered our greatest living jazz musician and he left an indelible mark on the sound and shape of the music. Performers and speakers for the event have not been announced yet.

A Few Notes

Some of the best moments in country music are the ones you don’t see coming. A performance that stops you in your tracks. A lyric you’ve heard a hundred times that suddenly hits differently. An artist you thought you knew until you see them in a smaller, more intimate setting and discover there’s even more to their story. That’s one of the things I love about live music. You never quite know what a moment is going to become.

After our inaugural Top Shelf Country Cruise, I heard something from guests again and again:

“I’ve only ever seen them in arenas. This hits different up close.”

I knew exactly what they meant. There’s nothing quite like a big country concert. Thousands of voices singing along, the lights, the energy, the excitement of seeing an artist you’ve been waiting months to see. Those moments are unforgettable. But then there’s the experience of sitting a little closer. The stories feel more personal. You hear the little details behind a song. You see the artist’s personality come through in a different way. And sometimes a song you’ve heard countless times suddenly feels like you’re hearing it for the first time. It isn’t necessarily a different artist. You’re simply getting to see another side of them.

That’s one of the things I hope our guests take away from Top Shelf Country Cruise. Yes, you will see incredible performances, but you will also have opportunities to experience these artists in settings that allow their personalities and stories to come through. Sometimes the most memorable moments aren’t the biggest ones. They’re the ones where you feel like you were just a little bit closer to the music and to the person making it.

Behind the Songs
Randy Houser

There is a lot you can learn about an artist from the songs they sing. But sometimes it’s what happens between the songs that tells you even more. I recently asked Randy Houser about some of the experiences, influences and moments that have shaped his career, and his answers gave me a glimpse at the person behind the music.

For Randy, one pivotal moment came before the hits and the big stages. It was the decision to leave Mississippi and make the move to Nashville. That’s a leap that takes a certain amount of belief in yourself. And for Randy, it ultimately changed the course of his life and career.

Then there’s the music that influenced him along the way. When I asked what non-country album had surprisingly influenced his musical style, his answer wasn’t what I expected – AC/DC‘s Back in Black. Randy said he wore the album out as a kid and its influence has stayed with him throughout his career.

I love hearing things like that because they remind us that an artist’s musical influences aren’t always as predictable as we might think. The music that shapes us doesn’t necessarily have to sound like the music we eventually make. But perhaps the most revealing answer came when I asked Randy which of his songs has connected with fans in unexpected ways. He pointed to “Note to Self,” a song he wrote during a pivotal point in his own life, when he was questioning his choices and trying to make better ones. Since then, he’s heard from grown men who have reached similar turning points in their own lives. They’ve told him how the song made them stop, think and consider making different choices. That’s a pretty remarkable connection between an artist and his audience.

A song can start as something deeply personal to the person who writes it. Then it leaves the songwriter’s hands and becomes part of someone else’s story. That’s when you know a song has truly connected. And that’s the part you don’t always see from the stage. You hear the music. But when you get a little closer, you begin to understand the experiences, influences and stories behind it. Sometimes, that’s where the best stories are found.

What makes an intimate performance feel different from a stadium show?

Artists often tell us the answer is not what you’d think – they are WAY more nervous performing for smaller audiences. Arena and stadium crowds have a huge vibe – and singers love to roll with that energy. But in intimate venues the artists can see faces and sense if their music is connecting.

If someone in the audience looks bored, it can freak them out! Also, a smaller stage requires performers to talk more and share additional facets of who they are, which can also be scary! Stadium shows are a great community experience. Intimate performances can feel one-on-one in a very special

Aside from the obvious, which is distance between artist and fan, it’s the bigger personal connection made in a smaller scale venue. Vince Gill is a prime example of what I’m going for here. Vince performed a show in my hometown of Rogersville, Tennessee a few years back. It was just Vince accompanied by his dear friend John Hobbs on keyboard who was positioned next to a row of five guitars on a stand which all eventually were played by Vince. The audience was around 700 in an auditorium, and I guarantee that was the closest the majority of that audience had ever been to a Hall of Famer like Vince. He had that audience in the palm of his hand, and you know what, they had him in theirs. He was telling stories and jokes between songs; eye contact was nonstop. There was laughter, tears and some direct interaction with several members of the audience, which in the end resulted in mutual respect and admiration.

Stadium shows are exciting and memorable, but the more intimate shows, while more at ease, make an even stronger impression.

The was a time, believe it or not, when you would purchase your newspaper from stands on street corners. Sellers would walk into the street and shove the paper into your car through an open window, and you paid them on the spot. Kids had paper routes which were eventually gobbled up by older guys who drove through your neighborhood and tried to hit your front door or porch with the daily news.

In a recent edition of Jazz Notes, we reflected on the results of the DownBeat Critics Poll, which was tilted far away from the mainstream and smooth jazz genres, toward more left-of-center and less accessible artists. So we thought it would be fun to do our poll of our guests about their favorites in the same categories, with artists on the ballot all having performed on one or more of our cruises

The results are in and, although they reflect the popularity of The Smooth Jazz Cruise and The Jazz Cruise within our portfolio of jazz (and jazz-adjacent) programs, the musicianship and artistic excellence are prevalent throughout. The Influence of Jazz

Yesterday, we announced the inaugural sailing of The Yacht Rock Cruise. For those unfamiliar with that genre, over the last few years, fans of soft rock tunes from the 70s and 80s have formalized certain aspects of that music, named it Yacht Rock and created an alternative world that features yachts, cruising and the celebration of the “smooth” life. Both SXM and iHeart Radio have dedicated channels to present this music and stars like Keith Urban and Charlie Puth are crossing over to present new twists on these songs.

The Yacht Rock Cruise joins Top Shelf Country Cruise, David Foster: The Hitman Cruise and Chris Botti at Sea as the non-jazz programs produced by Signature Cruise Productions. But are they really “non-jazz”? Let’s talk.

When it comes to identifying and securing talent for our jazz programs, we have 26+ years of experience with and involvement in the jazz world. Many, if not most, of the stars of jazz know us and we know them. Offers are sent out by us routinely and without a great deal of formality. If someone says “no,” it is more likely due to a scheduling issue than not wanting to join us. The community is wonderful to work with and the process goes quickly and smoothly.

Once we cross the line from jazz and enter the world of country music and Adult Contemporary, life changes. I joke that Signature Cruise Experiences goes from being the Superman of the jazz genre to being Clark Kent (and often just Jimmy Olsen) of the music world. But, when the agents and managers learn more about our history, a significant degree of respect begins to emerge. Why? It’s all about the jazz!

Most musicians would like to be recognized as being able to play jazz. That is the pinnacle of the profession as musicians recognize that the greatest musicians in the world play jazz. Jazz musicians formed the greatest bands in R & B and their influence on most Adult Contemporary music is undeniable. I could recite story after story about top pop music groups who claim to have been influenced and directed by jazz.

I used to do a lot of cooking, even took classes at the Culinary Institute of America, the only “CIA” that does not frighten me. There you learn that every sauce is a derivative of one of the five mother sauces (bechamel, velouté, espagnole, tomato, hollandaise). Once you learn how to make them, the world of sauces is available to you. You can almost add anything to one of the five and be okay. Remember, I said “almost.”

In music, all flows from classical and jazz. When someone shows us how to put an entire orchestra on a ship, we will present classical music, but, for now, we will follow the path of jazz to wherever it takes us in terms of music genres. That is our “calling card” and, as one manger recently said to us, “if you can produce top notch jazz music and make those cats happy with your sound and production, you can do anything.”

“Anything” is likely hyperbole but throw an “almost” in front of it, and you are on target. We love our programs, our guests, and our music. Individually, they are wonderful. Together, they are sublime.

No matter what we do, we are just a few steps away from our mother sauce, Jazz.

John Pizzarelli’s P.S. Mr. Bennett

Released this week on the occasion of Tony Bennett’s 100th birthday, John Pizzarelli has released P.S. Mr. Bennett, a five-song EP and followup to his Dear Mr. Bennett recording released earlier this year.

Joined once again by pianist Isaiah J. Thompson and bassist Mike Karn, the EP draws five additional songs from those same recording sessions, continuing Piz’s celebration of Bennett’s seven-decade long career. John will be performing the music from both recordings in shows at Jazz Alley in Seattle (August 13-16) and Catalina’s in Hollywood (August 20-22).

Cécile McLorin Salvant’s With Every Breath I Take

Cécile McLorin Salvant, who has performed on several of our jazz cruise programs over the years, recently released her first orchestral album, With Every Breath I Take, recorded with the Netherlands Metropole Orkest, conducted by Jules Buckley.

The album features 10 songs by noted composers Cy Coleman, Noël Coward, Duke Ellington, Stephen Sondheim and Billy Strayhorn, as well as by Cécile herself, with new arrangements by Darcy James Argue.

“I’ve always wanted to do an album that was all ballads,” Cécile explains. “And there are specific reasons why I love each of these songs. But behind the decision, I was actually not thinking. It was just about feeling.”

The Traditions We Keep

A Few Notes

As kids, Fridays had a special meaning in our family. My brother Scott and I called it “Cupcake Day.” Every Friday morning, our Mom or Dad would take us to Hilltop Bakery – still open today – and tell us we could each pick out whatever we wanted. A cupcake, a doughnut, an elephant ear… it didn’t matter. The choice was ours.

Once we had made our selections, we would fill a bakery box with a few extra treats and head over to Grandma and Grandpa Appleton’s house for breakfast. We’d spend a little time together before Scott and I walked the one block to school.

Looking back, it wasn’t really about the cupcake. It was knowing exactly where we would be every Friday morning. It was sitting around Grandma and Grandpa’s kitchen table before the day began. It was the comfort of a tradition that brought our family together and gave us something to look forward to every single week.

The memories we treasure most are often built around the simplest moments. They are the ones that quietly become part of our lives until we can’t imagine life without them.

The same is true for the traditions we choose to keep. Some begin with family. Others begin with friends. And sometimes they begin with music.

As guests headed home after our inaugural Top Shelf Country Cruise, I couldn’t help but notice what happened next. Before many guests had even unpacked their bags at home, they were already talking about next year. They weren’t just planning another vacation – they were looking forward to seeing friends again, hearing their favorite artists and creating another week of memories together. That made me smile because it reminded me of those Friday mornings at Hilltop Bakery. Some experiences quietly become traditions. Looking at so many familiar names already returning for another sailing tells me Top Shelf Country Cruise is becoming one of those traditions – and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Jamie became a household name with her back-to-back No. 1 hits “There Is No Arizona” and “When I Think About Angels.” She followed those with fan favorites including “Shiver,” “Trying to Find Atlantis” and “Somebody’s Hero,” earning four GRAMMY® nominations, an ACM Award, a Billboard Music Award and multiple CMA nominations along the way.

While many fans know Jamie for her unmistakable voice, she’s also an accomplished songwriter, having written songs for artists including Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, LeAnn Rimes, Idina Menzel and CeCe Winans. One of the things I admire most is that Jamie continues to create new music while honoring the songs that first introduced her to country music fans. Her recent album, Sometimes, features fresh recordings of several of her biggest hits, including a new version of “There Is No Arizona” with fellow Top Shelf performer Lauren Alaina. It’s a wonderful reminder that great songs continue to find new life while introducing new listeners to the music that made them classics.

We’re also looking forward to welcoming Jamie’s talented daughter, Aliyah Good, who will join us for a few special acoustic performances throughout the week, adding another memorable touch to an already incredible lineup.

How Traditions Begin

The funny thing about traditions is that they rarely start with a grand plan. No one wakes up one morning and says “This is something I’ll be doing for the next 20 years.” More often than not, they begin with a simple moment. A family breakfast every Friday morning. A favorite campground visited each summer. A concert that turns into an annual trip with friends. A standing date to watch the Grand Ole Opry every Saturday night. Over time, those moments become part of who we are. Before we know it, we find ourselves looking forward to them all year long.

The best part of building Top Shelf Country Cruise has been watching complete strangers become familiar faces. For many of our guests, that first sailing was a chance to try something new. But somewhere between the music, the laughter, the conversations and the friendships, something unexpected happened. A tradition quietly began.

We’ve already welcomed back so many familiar names for ’27 and every week I hear from guests who are bringing new friends and family members along to experience it for the first time. I can’t think of a better compliment than that. That’s how traditions grow. Someone invites a neighbor. A brother and sister decide to come along. A group of friends books staterooms together. Before long, what started as one unforgettable week becomes something everyone looks forward to year after year.

To me, that’s what makes Top Shelf Country Cruise so special. Yes, it’s about the music. But it’s also about the people you meet, the memories you make, the familiar faces you’re excited to see again and the new friendships that begin over breakfast, on the pool deck, or while waiting for the next show to start. Those are the moments that stay with us long after we return home. And those are the moments that have a way of becoming traditions.

The first chapter of Top Shelf Country Cruise has already given us memories we’ll never forget. Now we get to keep writing the story – together.

What artist, song or memory first made you fall in love with country music?

Honestly, I fall in love with country music over and over again – much like the foundation of a great marriage! After my decades of “being married” to country music as a fan and also working alongside the music creators, it still takes my breath away when I hear a new artist or a new song that floors me. It happened with the lightning sound of Charlie Daniels, the down home energy of the group Alabama, the deep country emotion of Randy Travis and even the pop country vibe of Shania Twain and Taylor Swift. I KNEW I was watching history unfold. I experienced that in the late 90s when I first met our ’26 cruise headliner, Keith Urban. And it’s happening now with our ’27 Top Shelf Country Cruise headliner, Riley Green. He’s another superstar in the making. Join us on board because we’ve known Riley since 2018 and we have some fun secrets to tell just for our cruise family!

That’s a tough question to have to answer having been so close to country music for so many years, but here goes. While several songs caught my attention prior, I would have to say that when I heard Kenny Rogers sing “The Gambler” in 1978, well that just sealed the deal. To begin with, the lyrics from Hall of Fame songwriter Don Schlitz were just so well done in illustrating a visual in your mind and that magic voice of Kenny just brought the story home. It was one of many successful “story songs” from Kenny like “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” “Lucille,” “Coward of the County” and so forth that truly illustrates just one segment of the true art form known as country music.

August Hits Different

Today is August 1, the first day of the last month of what most of us consider to be Summer. The Fall Solstice, the official end of Summer and start of Fall is September 22, but once August is over and Labor Day has passed, the weather may be summerlike, but the activities and the mindset is Fall. This phenomenon is now fully engrained in our school calendar. Mid to late August has replaced the day after Labor Day as the start of the school year in most areas.

For Jazz fans, both August and September are rich with festivals and events. Here is a sample of the festivals available:

September 19, 2026. A local favorite family-friendly outdoor street festival right in the St. Louis area.
Monterey Jazz Festival (Monterey, CA):
September 25–27, 2026. One of the longest-running continuous jazz festivals globally, held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds.

For us at Signature Cruise Experiences, August can be confusing, not because of any particular problem or concern, but it is difficult to target an identity upon which to focus. Immediately, we are in the final stages of planning for The Smooth Jazz Cruise ’26.3 and Chris Botti at Sea III, two west coast sailings the first of which sails from Vancouver to Los Angeles September 11–18 and the second reverses the itinerary and is sailing from September 18–25.

The Smooth Jazz Cruise ’26.3 has been fully reserved for months, but a few staterooms do remain available for Chris Botti at Sea III. There is still time to take advantage of lower Cruise Prices and something new, our Sail Now, Pay Later payment plan. Los Angeles to San Francisco to Victoria to Vancouver. Josh Groban, Melody Gardot, Boz Scaggs, Elvis Costello and, of course, our host Chris Botti. Not a bad way to start your Fall.

While we concentrate on those sailings, it will not be too much longer before we start one of the most ambitious lineups of sailings in our 26+ year history.

For those unfamiliar with The Yacht Rock Cruise, stay tuned for the announcement of the lineup and other details.“Yacht Rock” music is largely soft rock vocals from the ‘70s and ‘80s and has become the chosen music of those seeking a lifestyle that is consistent with yachting. Though the theme is certainly campy and kitsche, the music is first rate and this cruise will bring together many of the top performers who have been adopted by those following the Yacht Rock genre.

None of Yacht Rock is jazz or even close. Obviously, neither is Top Shelf Country Cruise. Both the David Foster and Chris Botti cruises have a jazzy element to them, but if only one category could be assigned to the cruises, it would be Adult Contemporary.

Is Signature Cruise Experiences changing its focus? Now that is a question worth discussing. I guess the answer depends upon how you define our “focus.” With three sailings of The Smooth Jazz Cruise and our sailings of The Jazz Cruise and Journey of Jazz, more than half our programs fall squarely in the world of jazz. While the other programs veer from that core, the Adult Contemporary cruises continue to provide the music that appeals to a certain generation and demographic.

In all of our jazz programs, there has always been a touch of Adult Contemporary music, particularly with respect to vocals. Perhaps that is the best way to look at the divergence of programs. As for Top Shelf Country Cruise and The Yacht Rock Cruise, the dots become more difficult to connect to our roots. However, though the music may be different, our intent and approach remains the same.

We will produce the most authentic and top notch cruise programs in the world. We will pay attention to details and to serving our guests. That is our mission and nothing short of making everyone happy is acceptable. Thanks for listening.

Most of the time, I write this note solely for you. Today’s note helped me out as well. Sometimes you need to take a step back and see what is going on around you to make sure that you are on the right track and doing the right thing. Hopefully, you feel that we are doing just that.

Milestones: A Miles Davis Centennial Celebration

On August 21-23, our friends at KSDS FM 88.3 are presenting a massive celebration of the life and music of Miles Davis in this, the centennial year of his birth.

Held at the Wyndham Bayside Hotel in San Diego, “Milestones” features a robust schedule of concerts, rare film screenings, panel discussions and special presentations. Performers and speakers include Charles McPherson, Jon Faddis, Nicholas Payton, Jeremy Pelt, Terrell Stafford, Gilbert Castellanos, Bobby Watson, Ernie Watts and many others.

“Over three days and 16 concerts, audiences will experience the complete arc of Miles Davis’s musical journey, performed by musicians with deep personal and artistic connections to that history,” said Ken Poston, KSDS Station Manager. “It is an experience that cannot be duplicated anywhere else.”

On that same weekend (Aug. 21-23), clear across the continent, the Markham Jazz Festival will be held on Main Street Unionville in Markham, Ontario, Canada. A Few Notes

I was just five years old when I attended my first Grand Ole Opry show at the historic Ryman Auditorium. We were passing through Nashville on one of our family camping trips, the same month-long summer adventures I shared with you a few weeks ago. My dad had carefully mapped our route, my Aunt Janie was along for the trip, and our little family was making memories one campground at a time.

One of the highlights Dad had planned for our family camping trip was a night at the Grand Ole Opry. My sweet mom, Carol, had me all dressed up in the most adorable long red gingham dress. I felt so special that night. At some point during the show, rain began dripping through a small hole in the roof and onto me. I noticed it, but I was so captivated by the music that I never said a word. I didn’t want to miss a single moment. When the show was over, my mom realized I was soaking wet from head to toe. We laughed about it, but all I could think about was the music. Even at five years old, I knew there was something special about Nashville. I couldn’t have explained it then, but I left with a feeling that I would be back someday.

Years later, I was working with KYGO in Denver when Boy Howdy came through town for a concert. By then, I knew Nashville was calling, I just needed an opportunity to get there. That opportunity came from the band’s tour manager, Scott Olson. Scott took the time to introduce me to people, help me make connections and encourage me to keep pursuing the dream that had begun years earlier in that little red gingham dress at the Ryman. Those introductions eventually led me to a job I loved and to an entire community of people who welcomed me into the fold.

Looking back, I realize Nashville didn’t become special because I built a career there. It became special because people believed in me, opened doors for me, and made me feel like I belonged. Over the years, I’ve realized that’s what country music does so well. It welcomes people exactly where they are. You don’t have to know every artist or every lyric. If a song makes you smile, reminds you of someone you love, or takes you back to a moment you’ll never forget, you’re already part of the story.

As we continue building Top Shelf Country Cruise, that’s the feeling I hope every guest experiences the moment they step onboard. Not just that they are on an incredible vacation, but that they’ve found a place where friendships come naturally, music brings people together and everyone feels like they belong.

One Stage. Six Artists. One Dream.

Long before they became the artists we know today, every country singer shared a common dream: hearing the words, “Welcome to the Grand Ole Opry.” Performing on the Opry stage is more than another performance. It represents a connection to the generations of artists who came before them and a place in the history of country music. Standing in that famous wooden circle is a moment many artists dream about from the very beginning of their careers. One of the special things about the Top Shelf Country Cruise ’27 lineup is that every artist joining us has experienced that honor.

Riley Green has brought his traditional country sound and authentic storytelling to the Grand Ole Opry stage, connecting with fans through songs that celebrate the people, places and moments that shape our lives.

Chris Young has become a familiar face at the Opry throughout his career. A Nashville native, Chris has built a reputation as one of country music’s strongest vocalists while continuing the tradition of the music that inspired him.

Lauren Alaina grew up dreaming about moments like performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Her journey from a young singer with big dreams to an accomplished country artist is a reminder of the dedication behind every success story.

Randy Houser has earned his place as one of country music’s great voices. His heartfelt performances and traditional country influences continue to connect with fans everywhere.

Jackson Dean represents the next generation of country artists carrying the tradition forward. His powerful voice and honest songwriting bring a fresh perspective while honoring the roots of the music.

Travis Denning has also stepped into that famous circle, joining the many artists who have experienced the incredible honor of performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Every time these artists walk onto the Top Shelf Country Cruise stage, they bring more than their songs. They bring the stories, traditions and history that make country music so meaningful. The Ryman, the Opry and a Circle That Means Everything

If you’ve ever walked through the doors of the Ryman Auditorium, you know it’s different. There is a feeling inside those walls that is hard to put into words. Long before the lights come up and the music begins, you can almost feel the stories that have happened there, the voices that have filled the room, the artists who have stood on that stage, and the generations of country music fans who have gathered together under that roof.

The Ryman became the home of the Grand Ole Opry in 1943, and for more than three decades it welcomed the biggest names in country music to its famous stage. Legends who helped shape country music history performed there, creating memories that still live on today. The Grand Ole Opry continues as the longest-running live radio show in the world, carrying on a tradition that has connected artists and fans for nearly a century. Today, the Opry continues to bring live performances to audiences every week, with the same commitment to celebrating the past while welcoming the next generation of country music artists.

During the years when the Opry called the Ryman Auditorium home, another Nashville landmark became part of that story. Just across the alley was Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Between Opry performances, artists would often walk across the alley to Tootsie’s to relax, visit with friends, share stories and spend time with fellow musicians. It became a gathering place where artists could be themselves away from the stage, a place where friendships were formed, songs were shared and Nashville’s music community grew stronger. That connection between the Ryman, the Grand Ole Opry and Tootsie’s became part of the history and character of downtown Nashville.

In 1974, the Grand Ole Opry moved to its new home at the Grand Ole Opry House, but the connection to the Ryman was never forgotten. When we toured the Grand Ole Opry House, one moment stood out above all the others, the famous wooden circle at center stage. Many people don’t realize that circle isn’t just part of the stage design. It is a six-foot circle of oak taken from the stage of the historic Ryman Auditorium and permanently placed in the new Opry House when it opened. It serves as a reminder that while the Grand Ole Opry moved to a new building, the heart and heritage of those legendary Ryman years came with it.

For every country artist, standing in that circle represents something special. It is a connection to the artists who came before them, the stories that shaped country music and the incredible honor of becoming part of that tradition. Receiving an invitation to perform on the Grand Ole Opry is still considered one of the greatest milestones in an artist’s career. When my family toured the Grand Ole Opry House, my dad couldn’t resist making his own little piece of history. He pulled out his four-hole Hohner harmonica and played a few notes while standing in that famous circle. From that day on, he loved telling people he had “played the Grand Ole Opry.”

Even though I now call Nashville home, every time I visit the Ryman or the Grand Ole Opry, I still feel that same sense of wonder I felt as a five-year-old girl in a red gingham dress sitting inside the Ryman for the first time. Some places become more than buildings. They become part of who we are. For me, the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry will always represent the heart of country music – the history, the people and the stories that continue to bring us all together.

What is the one thing visitors to Nashville should experience
if they want to understand country music?

We’d like to suggest one “area” that has so many elements of what country music is all about, that 5-block stretch of Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville. It’s sometimes referred to as the Honky Tonk Highway. Assembled in that part of town is the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum which is a must. Then there’s the Ryman Auditorium filled with unbelievable history of the genre.

And, of course, by then you’ll be thirsty, so you can choose from any of the waterin’ holes, or honky tonks and feel the country vibe with live music coming at you from all directions! There are LOADS of stages where you can watch up-and-coming singers and bands earn their tips. In fact, your dollars in those tip jars just might help a struggling artist become the next superstar!
